Collaborative Cluster Decolonising the Curriculum Workshop 2 – Urgency

The QAA Collaborative Cluster in Decolonising the Curriculum are delighted to invite colleagues from across the sector to join the second practice-sharing event. The focus of this second event is on the ‘urgency’ of taking our decolonising the curriculum work forward. We acknowledge that a lot of this work starts with interrogating our own positionalities and how they shape our practice. For this reason, we will begin with mini provocations from colleagues sharing their perspective on what ‘urgency’ looks for them and in their work. The next part of this event will lead you into professional dialogue with a triad where you will have the opportunity to share what you do and hear others’ perspectives.

 Please note that the nature of the topic means some of these conversations may be uncomfortable as well as powerful. The Cluster facilitators will ensure these dialogues take place in a space that is safe and where you can pause and take time out if you need to for reflection.

EVENT SPEAKERS

Dave S. P Thomas is an Occupational Therapist (specialism in Occupational Science), a Public Health Practitioner, and Doctoral Researcher who specialises in racial and social justice. He previously managed the university of Kent’s Student Success project, which conducts research on inequalities in academic attainment and develops evidence-based interventions to improve students’ educational experiences and academic outcomes. He is the lead editor of Doing Equity and Diversity for Success in Higher Education (Thomas and Arday, 2021), a book that illuminates the dynamic interplay between historical events and discourse and more sophisticated and racialized acts of violence. He is also the lead editor of Towards Decolonising the University: A Kaleidoscope for Empowered Action (Thomas and Jivraj, 2020), a book that aims to amplify the otherwise silenced voices of students of colour in the academy. Dave is also the co-editor of Diversity, Inclusion and Decolonisation: Practical Tools for Improving Teaching, Research and Scholarship (Day, Lee, Thomas and Sipckard, 2021),  Bristol University Press

Lindy-Ann Blaize-Alfred has over ten years’ experience in further and higher education; with a clear understanding of the UK Higher She completed her doctoral studies at Sheffield University where her focus was on developing a post-colonial methodological approach to feminist research and then worked for nearly a decade in further education supporting pre-masters’ international students preparing for University. She currently works across the university and the sector to deliver high impact, innovative CPD. One of the key objectives of her practice is to ensure that work undertaken is collaborative in nature, involving key stakeholders – for example in delivering on the race equality charter mark.
